Tom Smith, started playing music in the 5th grade, at the young age of 10 years old, in Sacramento, CA. He played all throughout his high school and college years. He studied trumpet with Noel Smelser at CSUS (Sacramento) and John Coppola in San Francisco.

He played “road” gigs out of San Francisco for a year and then joined a hotel lounge act that toured for 3 years in the 1970”s. After years of “road” gigs, he lived in Prescott and Cottonwood Arizona area and worked for Clare Willey in his Cottonwood music store and played lead trumpet in his big band for 2 years. At that time, he had put together a music trio and worked local clubs in Cottonwood and Sedona. 

In 1978, he moved back to San Francisco and played in John Coppola’s Octet, played in his big band, and did some studio and copy work for him. He momentarily retired from playing music in 1979, when he moved back to Sacramento, he did not play again until 1990. He has since been playing in local groups and today he is the “temporary” Music Director of a local swing band called “Swingmasters”.
